Queen City Classic

Wednesday, March 10, 2010
Collinsworth will honor Munoz at chess tournament
Contributed By Jordan Kellogg Community Press

More than 600 scholastic chess players from all over the Midwest have registered for the 9th Annual Queen City Classic Chess Tournament, making it the second largest attendance in the event’s history. Held on March 12-13, 2010 at Paul Brown Stadium’s Club West, the tournament kicks off Friday evening with its first annual Shining Knight Award Ceremony, followed by live entertainment, a blindfold chess match between chess masters and the traditional simultaneous exhibition or “simul.”

Cris Collinsworth will begin Friday night’s events by honoring Anthony Munoz, the Pro Football Hall of Famer, former Cincinnati Bengal, and the evening’s emcee, with the first annual Shining Knight Award for his leadership and service to youth. Following his welcome, guests will be treated to an exhilarating step performance by the W.E.B. DuBois Academy Step Team.

Local masters will also square off against 40 young chess players simultaneously, a must-see display of intellectual prowess and extreme strategy. The tournament kicks off the next morning at 9:00 a.m. and culminates in an awards ceremony where more than 150 trophies are awarded.

Hosted by the Cris Collinsworth ProScan Fund and The Cincinnati Bengals, the tournament creatively promotes discipline, goal-setting and critical thinking in a youth-friendly manner. Nearly every neighborhood in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky is represented at the tournament, displaying the diversity of the Queen City. One of the largest scholastic chess tournaments in the Midwest, the tournament won the national acclaim of the prestigious United States Chess Federation’s “Organizer of the Year” award and continues to be revered nationally in the chess world.

Having serious fun playing chess

Weston’s Zachary Filler and Sadie Edelman: Having serious fun playing chess
Written by Patricia Gay
Wednesday, 10 March 2010 11:53

Although Sadie Edelman is just five, she knows the difference between a Queen’s Gambit and a Sicilian Defence. So does 10-year-old Zachary Filler.

That’s because both Sadie and Zachary share a strong interest in the game of chess, and are very familiar with two of the game’s popular moves.

Though very different in age, Sadie and Zachary both love to play chess for fun, and also in tournament play — where they are rapidly making a name for themselves.

Zachary has won several tournaments, and recently took first prize in the junior varsity section of the 44th annual Greater New York Junior High Chess Championship.

Sadie started playing tournament chess last year and has earned nine trophies so far in competition. She has dreams of one day becoming a champion player.

“When I grow up I want to be a chess master,” she said.

Popular game

Chess is a popular pastime in America where an estimated 45 million play — and more than half of those are children.

The Internet has helped expand chess’s availability, as it requires no board or pieces — or even a live competitor — in order to play.

Chess is thought to be the oldest game in the world, originating in what is now northern India or Afghanistan, sometime before 600 AD. It was well-established across all of Europe by 1400 AD, following the same rules that are used today.

The Agreement was signed by the mayor of the City of Rijeka Vojko Obersnel and FIDE vice-president Georgios Makropoulos. This signing was also attended by ECU president Boris Kutin, president of Chess Club Rijeka Damir Vrhovnik and Head of the Sports Department of the City of Rijeka Veljko Karabaić.
